Road Trip in the Palouse – 7.22.2009
July 29, 2009This last week we had the pleasure of showing a dear friend the Palouse area of eastern Washington. We drove all farm roads from Coeur D’ Alene, Idaho to Moscow, Idaho and Pullman, Washington. Using Colfax, Washington as our base, we drove east to Dayton, WA crossing the trail of Lewis and Clark to start getting a feel of where the Palouse ends and the Channel Scablands start. The Scablands of Washington were created during the epic flood 10,000 years ago, when an ice dam broke in northwest Montana and sent a wall of water estimated at 800 feet high through Spokane, WA and fanned out like a delta towards the Columbia River. This area of the state is void of top soil (unlike the Palouse), and is marked by a series of dry Coulees. A harsh landscape, but interesting to photograph.
